Three Decades Sustaining Our Natural Treasure: 2024 Annual Report

2024 was a particularly meaningful year for FMCN (acronym in Spanish), as we celebrated 30 years of Sustaining Our Natural Treasure. Our 2024 Annual Report is a commemorative edition that brings together the year’s key achievements and highlights three stories reflecting three decades of commitment to conservation, sustainable management, and capacity building.

These stories showcase the consolidation of financing models, landscape-level approaches, and local capacities that continue to shape and support our collective work.

Story 1: Closing the Financial Gap in Protected Areas (PAs): a pioneering fund became a long-term financial engine for more than 70 PAs.
In 1997, the Fund for Protected Areas (FANP, acronym in Spanish) was created as a public-private model that ensures long-term funding for conservation. Since then, it has grown more than tenfold, supporting +70 PAs and establishing exemplary collaboration among communities, local organizations, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp, in Spanish), and more than 25 donors.

Story 2: Promoting an Integrated Landscape Approach: a water project in a city became a national watershed management strategy.
Since 2002, FMCN has promoted projects that go beyond PA boundaries to sustainably manage watersheds, strengthening ecological connectivity and water security. Initiatives such as Watersheds and Cities, C6, CONECTA, and RÍOS have benefited thousands of producers and helped restore strategic landscapes. In 2025, a new project called ORIGEN will scale these efforts in priority watersheds, and Ríos y Ciudades will be designed to integrate urban planning with water management.

Story 3: Strengthening Capacity Building for Conservation: collective learning became the heart of conservation.
FMCN is committed to building local and institutional capacities to ensure that financial resources translate into natural resource protection. Through learning communities, collaborative networks, and programs such as L-SAM and Kaanbal Suut, individuals and organizations have been strengthened throughout the country. In 2025, a new Accreditation and Validation System for Environmental Institutions (SAVIA, acronym in Spanish) will be launched to support the professionalization of the environmental sector.

In addition to these stories, our report highlights some of the year’s most significant milestones. One of them was the approval of MEx30x30, an initiative that will support the conservation of 30% of Mexico’s territory through long-term sustainable financing for existing PAs. The project was presented by the Government of Mexico during COP16 in Colombia, in alignment with the 48 goals of the National Biodiversity Strategy.

In 2024, we also reached a higher level of direct access to climate finance from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). We consolidated our environmental and social policy with a gender perspective and strengthened participatory biodiversity monitoring through tools such as BIOCOMUNI.

Over these three decades, we have learned that these achievements are the result of a connected, aware, and active ecosystem. We are confident that the partnerships that have accompanied us will continue to be key in addressing the challenges ahead. Here are some highlights of this collaboration:

  • 53,477,130 hectares funded for protection.
  • 1,199,804 hectares funded with sustainable management activities.
  • 117,521 people have adopted best sustainable practices.
  • 2,977 grants awarded.
  • 382 priority species addressed.
  • 352 local organizations funded for conservation or sustainable management activities.
We invite you to explore and share our 2024 Annual Report, a testament to the collective work driving a Mexico with thriving nature and a sustainable future.
